Third Church of Christ, Scientist

Third Church of Christ, ScientistLocated on the northwest corner of 16th and I Streets, NW, and only two blocks north of the White House, is the Third Church of Christ, Scientist.

Whether you think it is an eyesore — some refer to it as a bunker — or find it oddly attractive, you can not deny that it commands notice.

Built in 1971 of poured concrete, it is an outstanding example of Brutalist architecture.

Bells detailThere was a nice segment on NPR’s All Things Considered back on August 21, 2008 that featured the church. To read that feature, click on the link. NPR story>>
