Do You Enjoy Cell Phone Calls on Metro?

Posted in Uncategorized on March 2, 2009 by Kent

U Street Metro StationWhether you want to use your cell phone while riding Metro, or want to pummel those that already do, it looks like we’ll all have to adjust to an increase in chatting, texting, and ringtones while riding Metro. The Metro Board has approved four major cell phone companies to build a new wireless infrastructure in the underground rail system over the next four years. The approved carriers are Verizon Wireless, Sprint Nextel, AT&T and T-Mobile. The companies will build and maintain their own wireless network and will also build a second one for Metro to run in support of emergencies.

American City Diner

Posted in Chevy Chase, Food, Restaurants on March 2, 2009 by Kent

American City DinerI think I’m in love!!! I’ve never been to Chevy Chase before, and since I was in the area and hungry, I keep going further north on Connecticut hoping to find a good — and economical — meal. Low and behold, when I finally got to the intersection with Morrison I found the American City Diner.

I love that its open 24 hours a day. I love that it is an old, genuine diner (with a few modern additions). I love that I can get steak and eggs at 4 in the afternoon. And, lastly, I love that they show movies.

American City Diner InteriorThe food was decent, exactly what you would expect to find at a diner. Even better, it was priced right. If you don’t have a lot of green and don’t want to eat at Burger King, McDonalds, or Taco Bell, you can order off a menu and be served for around the same price here.

power-meterApril 1st is around the corner, and with it, there could be a surge in homes loosing electricity. In the District, one fourth of Pepco’s customers who rely on electricity for heat were in arrears in 2008, data shows.

Shut-Off Notices have surged. Data provided by the utilities to regulators show that Baltimore Gas and Electric issued 1.9 million shut-off notices in 2008; Washington Gas issued 472,586; and Pepco, 426,202. Regulators say tens of thousands of customers could lose service April 1, when the winter restriction on shut-offs ends.

Kameny Home on Road to National Register of Historic Places

Posted in Palisades, People on March 2, 2009 by Kent

As reported last week in the Washington Business Journal, the home of Franklin Kameny, a longtime activist for gay rights, was designated by the Historic Preservation Review Board as a local landmark at a hearing last Thursday. It has become the first gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender site in D.C.’s inventory of historic sites.

During the 1960s and the early 1970s, Kameny’s home, located at 5020 Cathedral Ave., NW, served as a meeting place for planning gay civil rights campaigns and strategies. Kameny still lives in the home.

Still Snowing

Posted in Random Observations on March 2, 2009 by Kent

So color me surprised … the forecast seems to have been accurate. I’d like to know how I’m going to be able to shovel the walk if work has a 2 hour delay, and the snow isn’t supposed to stop until 2 p.m. At least the City requires sidewalks to be shoveled within 4 hours after snow ends, so that give me time.Snow morning March 2 2009
