Dumpster Fire at Raymond Elementary School

Posted in 16th Street Heights, Columbia Heights, Fires, Schools with tags , , , on June 25, 2009 by Kent

I chanced upon this last night as I was walking west of the Georgia Ave/Petworth Metro. There was a dumpster fire around 6:45 pm, and strangely enough, when we called 911 to report it, the fire truck was already on the way. I don’t think anyone cared too much about the dumpster … but it was way too close to the building and could have caused serious damage.

Graure Sentencing Postponed

Posted in Crime, Fires, Glover Park on January 28, 2009 by Kent

I just found out that the sentencing of Vasile Graure, which was rescheduled for today after being moved from January 13th, is being postponed again. It looks like the new date will be March 20th. From The Examiner today, I learned that federal prosecutors were asking D.C. Superior Court Judge Robert I. Richter to sentence Graure to 43 years in prison for the 10 counts of assault with intent to kill and arson in the 2007 Good Guys gentlemen’s club fire.

I have to tell you, having been one of the jurors in this trial, I’m disappointed that this is all they are asking for. Graure showed no emotion during the trial and continued to alter his appearance when witnesses described the appearance of the perpetrator.

I’ll keep you all posted on this case, as it is of particular interest to me.
