1940 Door Chime Restored

Posted in Renovation and Restoration on January 2, 2009 by Kent

One of the reasons we bought the house we did was that many of its original features were still intact. The doors, the woodwork, very little had changed since 1917, and it seems nothing had changed since the 1940s. One of those gems was a 1940 NuTone door chime. Like everything else in the house, it needed some TLC, as it didn’t work. Fortunately, it only needed new grommets and cleaned plunger. Both of which I was able to do myself. Granted, I didn’t know that was all I needed to do when I looked at the mechanism, but with some help for those that know more than I, it got there. I also took the opportunity to freshen up the paint and now that its installed, it works and looks great.

Rock Creek Church Rd & Quincy

I have no clue why anyone would have taken a photo of this corner. As you can see from the two photos, not much has changed other than the street lamp. The first photo was taken sometime between 1920 to 1950 (courtesy of the Library of Congress, Prints and Photographs Division). The other photo is how the corner looks today. The green space beyond the fence is part of the Old Soldiers’ Home.
