Graure Sentencing Postponed

Posted in Crime, Fires, Glover Park on January 28, 2009 by Kent

I just found out that the sentencing of Vasile Graure, which was rescheduled for today after being moved from January 13th, is being postponed again. It looks like the new date will be March 20th. From The Examiner today, I learned that federal prosecutors were asking D.C. Superior Court Judge Robert I. Richter to sentence Graure to 43 years in prison for the 10 counts of assault with intent to kill and arson in the 2007 Good Guys gentlemen’s club fire.

I have to tell you, having been one of the jurors in this trial, I’m disappointed that this is all they are asking for. Graure showed no emotion during the trial and continued to alter his appearance when witnesses described the appearance of the perpetrator.

I’ll keep you all posted on this case, as it is of particular interest to me.

Great Pop-up!

Posted in Logan Circle on January 28, 2009 by Kent

Rarely do I see a pop-up that seems so completely in keeping with the original structure. The materials and scale are great — two things that most people get wrong when they decide to go higher. I don’t know if this is the result of a Historic District or not, but would not be surprised in the least to discover that an actual architect had been used. This example is on the south side of Q Street between 14th and 15th, NW.005

Mixed Review for 1931 16th Street Northwest

Posted in Dupont Circle, Real Estate on January 28, 2009 by Kent

I don’t know about this house. I really wanted to see it, and it does have many wonderful things to offer. Its on 16th Street. Its still a single house. It has a lot of closets and its a very deep house with three floors, 7 bedrooms, and 5 full baths. Hey, for $1,649,000 you’d think it would offer more than the average house. Its a great location, great street appeal, and more square footage than most people would need. There was also a gas fireplace in just about every room.

So, what could be less than ideal? Well, the kitchen was poorly planned out, and not state of the art. Call me silly, but once you hit the $1,000,000 mark, I just really expect a great kitchen. Also, while nearly all of the woodwork was original, it was either caked in layers of paint, or, where it had been refinished, it wasn’t treated with the TLC that I would have done. It was rough to the touch, and it looked rough as well. Most disturbing to me was that several of the ceilings indicated that the plaster was severely cracked, or loose. Sooner or later, they will need to be addressed.

So, is this house priced right considering its location and condition? I don’t know. Fortunately, I don’t have to make that decision.

Ball-Tip Hinge

Posted in Renovation and Restoration on January 28, 2009 by Kent

ball-tip-hingeLast week, I showed how you can renovate an old ball-tip hinge. You may recall from that post that I stated the final product will only be as good as the condition of the hinge itself. I also stated that if you wanted the antique hinge to look new, you’d better buy a new hinge rather than go through all the work of trying to restore an old one.

So, I thought it only fair to point to one possible place to purchase a new ball-tip hinge. Rejuvenation is one of several places that market historically sympathetic hardware. The hinge to the left is from their site. To see their entire offerings, go to their Web site. Visit Rejuvenation>>
