A Smile for Friday

I saw this in a section of sidewalk on Warder Street and it really made me smile, so, I thought I’d share it.Godzilla with Ice Cream

Lost Washington

This is a great image of a neighborhood long gone. The S. & M. Garage was at 1321 L Street, NW. Nothing on this part of L Street remains from when this photograph was snapped, which I’m judging to be ca. 1925. Streetcars to Return

Posted in Anacostia, Near Northeast, Street Cars on February 27, 2009 by Kent

streetcarI was very excited to read in yesterday’s Express that the D.C. Department of Transportation is moving forward with its plans to reinstate streetcars into our transit system. As has been reported before, the first phase will be along the waterfront in Anacostia, followed by an expansion down H Street, NE.

I know this is a somewhat hot topic, with many voices coming down strongly either pro or con streetcars. I tend to fall in the pro camp … especially as one of the proposed lines would go down Georgia Avenue. Also, I would much rather have light rail than busses (I’ve never heard of a streetcar swerving and cutting off a car in traffic).

If you want to see the Department of Transportation’s plans for the initial phases, as well as how they see the system looking by 2030, go here>>

Men’s Hats

Display window at 7th Street and Florida Avenue, N.W. (Aug. 1942)I stumbled across this photograph the other day, which is of a display window at 7th Street and Florida Avenue, N.W., taken in August of 1942. (Library of Congress Prints and Photographs collection, LC-USF34- 013446-C)

Other than being a great old photo, it does beg the question: What ever happened to men’s hats?

Occasionally I see a man in a nice hat, and I’ve certainly been thinking that I should get one of my own, but I don’t know where I’d go to find a good hat, let alone what style I should get.

Small Crime Spree Last Night

Posted in Columbia Heights, Crime, Park View, Pleasant Plains on February 26, 2009 by Kent

It appears that last night was a little crazy with crime in the confluence of Columbia Heights, Park View, and Pleasant Plains. On the Park View/Pleasant Plains border of Georgia Avenue and Gresham Street a man was fatally stabbed to death, while a woman was hit by a stray bullet around 9 p.m., just about three hours after the stabbing, a short distance away at the 1300 block of Columbia Road.
