Cherry Blossoms to Bloom During Festival This Year

cherry-blossomsEvery year, we brace for the crush of tourists that come to the city to see the annual blooming of the cherry trees around the tidal basin. There are many years when I choose not to go because of the mass of people.

One of the many games we play in DC is trying to guess when the blooms will be at their peak, and then, which day is the best to see them. Even when there is a good prediction, a hard rain can cause the delicate petals to fall from the trees.

This year, Rob DeFeo, the National Park Service’s cheif horticulturist, is predicting that nearly 70% of the trees will be at peak between April 3-9. What’s rare, is that this is actually during the festival this year, which runs March 23-April 12. I can’t remember the last time the two coincided.

Additionally, following many years of tradition, Michelle Obama will serve as the honorary chairwoman of the festival. The tradition of having the first lady chair dates to 1912, when Helen Taft helped plant the first two trees from Japan.
