15% Increase in DC Homeless Rate

HomelessWhile I find the increase in the District’s homeless families disturbing, I can’t say I’m surprised. I was commenting to a friend of mine who lives in Dupont about a month ago that I’ve noticed a lot more people on the streets recently and had asked him if it was my imagination or if there were, in fact, more people out there. He responded that he had noticed it too.

I know its got to be tough, and I suspect its going to get a lot worse before things get back to where they were. According to an article in the Washington Post on this subject yesterday,  much of this rise is due to the economy and families being forced from their homes — the number of homeless people in families rising to 5,263 from 4,566 the previous January 30th.
