Lost Washington: Cannon’s Steak House

Cannon’s Steak House was located in the Capitol City Market at 1270 5th Street, NE, at Florida Avenue. Thomas A Cannon Jr., with his son Thomas III, began doing business there in 1933 when it was called the Union Terminal Market. Considered a local landmark, it attracted legislators from Capitol Hill as well as truckers and merchants from the market. Even after the market closed in the mid-1960s, it was able to continue doing business at its location.

In August of 1972 Cannon’s was gutted by a two-alarm fire and never reopened. The fire followed an explosion, and fire investigators strongly suspected arson.
