This Date in History

April 17, 1905: It was reported in the Washington Post that settling in the massive abutment on the east side of the Connecticut avenue bridge had caused several breaks in the cement work. The breaks, one on the north side at the corner, and one on the wall to the south, had developed since the previous Tuesday — 6 days prior. On the 17th, they were just over an inch wide in places, and extended the entire height of  fifty-five feet to the top. A passerby along the road just to the north could clearly see the big crack on that side of the abutment.taft-bridge
