King Monument Hits Snag

martin-luther-king-jr-national-memorialI was disturbed to read on WJLA that the family of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. has charged the foundation building a National Mall monument to the civil rights leader about $800,000 for the use of his words and image in fund-raising efforts.

The Martin Luther King Jr. National Memorial is planned for a corner on the Tidal Basin that is directly between the Lincoln Memorial and the Jefferson Memorial. It would also be located near the FDR Memorial.

The memorial is being paid for almost entirely with private money in a fund-raising campaign led by the Martin Luther King Junior National Memorial Project Foundation. The monument will be turned over to the National Park Service once it is complete. Because of this, I find it distasteful, in the least, and greedy, at the most, for the family to seek compensation for a memorial to such an important historical figure. I can’t imagine members or Lincoln’s, Jefferson’s, or Roosevelt’s families seeking fees for the use of those leaders words when used to support a lasting tribute to the men they honored.

There is a good article on WUSA9 about this as well, which can be found here>>
