Swine Flu … Enough Already!!!

pigsquealcontestOK, in my generosity I grant that there is a new flu in town, that people are getting sick, and that no-one really knows whats up with it yet … but can we stop making a bigger story out of it than it is? Of the many things that really grind my gears, public panic based on ignorance is right there at the head of the pack.

When all is said and done, this flu may infect 10% of the population. Heck, it could infect 100%. That doesn’t mean it will end up being a major health concern. If there is one thing I’ve learned over the years its that, in generally, the very young and the very old are the ones at the highest  risk of death. This doesn’t mean that there has to be death.

Somehow we’ve survived SARS and Avian Flu. I kind of think we can survive this too. Should we ignore it … no. But please, please, please, can we keep our wits about us and put this into proper perspective? People are afraid to get on an airplane for crying out loud, but have no problem getting behind the wheel of a car — where their chances of serious injury or death are far greater.

When I asked my brother his opinion, he responded that he thought he was coming down with something and had had trouble hearing since his ears had started to get pointy … then chuckled. This is why I talk to him. His response was the perfect balance of current awareness, perspective, and balance.

  1. I used to not worry as much about these things because I also thought they mostly affected the very young and very old. Then I learned that the 1918 Flu Pandemic most affected those in the prime of their lives, throwing expectations on their heads. So wash your hands, avoid sick people and don’t go kissing any swine.

  2. If you are concerned about swine flu, the CDC has a website you can go to at http://www.cdc.gov/h1n1flu/
