May 2, 1903: At an early hour of the morning Policeman Boswell, of the Eighth precinct, heard distress calls blown on a police whistle. The signal had been given by Mrs. J.R. Sherwood, of 1836 Sixth street northwest. When the policeman arrived Mrs. Sherwood told him that she had been awakened by the sound of breaking glass, followed by footsteps in the kitchen. When she blew her whistle she saw the intruder run from the house.broken-window2
