Replacement Window Tax Rebate Worth Consideration

replacement windowsWhen I learned of this I had to completely rethink my house’s priorities.  The 2009 Stimulus Bill gives homeowners a $1,500 tax credit for installing new energy efficient windows in their homes. The tax credit is 30% of the cost to replace windows up to $1,500.  Windows can be installed from December 31, 2008 to December 31, 2010, so there is time to plan for this.

The new windows MUST have a 0.30 U-Factor (Value) or less AND a 0.30 SHGC to qualify.Homeowners must keep records that the windows meet the requirements and the IRS will have forms for homeowners for tax credit.

My home needs new windows, and while high on the list, it wasn’t at the top. This is partially because the main house needs 8 new windows, and the back part of the house has 10 windows. When you consider that the windows we have our eyes on are well over $500 per window, getting some money back at the end of the year makes this a tempting offer.

The Post also had a good article on replacement windows today, which you can read here>>

  1. Don’t get vinyl windows. With varying temperatures and direct sun, they expand and contract up to 3/8″ of an inch, pop their caulked joints, and then leak like crazy. Any part spring or gasket breaks and the window has to be replaced because they can’t be repaired. This is why no vinyl windows lasts more than 20 years, and most don’t last 10.

Wood windows don’t have these problems, you can still get the tax credit, and they will actually last long enough that they pay for themselves. If one of their parts breaks, you replace the part, not the window.

  2. Chris, funny you should say that. My partner and I have spent a lot of time looking at windows. He wants wood windows, which I’m cool with. At least with wood I can paint it whatever color it needs to be or leave it natural on the inside if that is what’s right for us.

Another sticking point for us is maintaining the character of the house. We currently have 6 over 1 casements. I want to replace it with 6 over 1. I’ve noticed a lot of people replace with 1 over 1. I don’t know … to me, it just looses something when you switch out the style of window. I know that the 1 over 1 tends to be less expensive, but I love my house and don’t want to change its character.
