The John Marshall Shuffle

John Marshall StatueToday, the statue of John Marshal is located in John Marshall Park, between the Canadian Embassy and the U.S. Court House, just north of Pennsylvania Avenue.

This was not always the case. The statue was once located on the west front of the Capitol, as can be seen in the photograph here taken sometime between 1909 and 1919.

The sculpture was complete in 1884 by sculptor William Wetmore Story and was commissioned by the United States Bar Association. There is a second cast of the statue that was placed in front of the Philadelphia Museum of Art. The sculptor was the son of Justice Joseph Story, a Supreme Court colleague of Marshall’s.John Marshall sculpture, current location
