January 20, 1937: Franklin D. Roosevelt becomes the first President sworn into office in January. It was his second of four inaugurations. The Constitution had established March 4 as Inauguration Day to allow enough time after Election Day for officials to gather election returns and elected candidates to travel to the capital. January 19, 1909: Miss Adela Verne, in her first appearance in Washington, performed at the Columbia Theater. It was heralded as one of the musical treats of the season. The accomplished pianist’s selections included works by Beethoven, Chopin, and Listz. She was enthusiastically received on this first American performance.adela-verne
