Columbia Heights Public Realm Project Taking Shape

Posted in Columbia Heights, Parks with tags , , , on June 11, 2009 by Kent

The fountain focal point of the Columbia Heights Public Realm Project has a lot of the plumbing installed. Lets hope this means that they’ll be able to get the plaza at 14th Street and Park Rd. back in order soon. While I like the idea of a fountain, I already miss the trees they removed after a few short years.Columbia Heights Public Realm fountain

Work to Begin on 14th Street Bridge

Posted in Bridges, Renovation and Restoration with tags , , on May 23, 2009 by Kent

14thstbridge_bgFollowing up on the April 30th announcement that DDOT was planning to start construction on the 14th Street bridge is the release below that work will commence this coming Wednesday.

It was reported that Virginia is up in arms because they feel that they were not given adequate notice of the planned renovation. To that, I say two things:

1) This bridge is entirely withing the District. It is the District’s responsibility to repair, and the District has to pay for it. When Virginia coughs up some cash, then we can talk; and,

2) I suspect that stimulus money may be involved. If so, that would explain why the 14th Street Bridge, the 9th Street Bridge, and Chain Bridge are all happening at the same time. Also, if this is the case, the District notified Virginia as soon as they knew work would begin.

The announcement is after the jump. Continue reading

Shepard Fairey Seems to be Pervasive

Posted in Presidents, Street Art with tags , , on April 30, 2009 by Kent

Now that I’m keeping my eyes open for Fairey’s art around town, I’ve actually started to notice quite a few. This one of Obama, from which the portrait in the National Portrait Gallery is based, is on 14th Street, NW, just north of U and is part of a much larger grouping. I haven’t been able to get a good shot of all of them, as its a construction zone right now. Perhaps this weekend I’ll be able to remedy that.progress-obama

Another Shepard Fairey Poster

I enjoy tripping over the posters of Shepard Fairey, even if a lot of his art has been accused of plagiarism. You can see an earlier post of a poster that is in Petworth, or one I found in Chinatown, or look a an archives of his work here. The poster below was found on the west side of 14th Street, NW, I think around around T Street.Shepard Fairey poster 3
