Evacuation Routes Confusing

Posted in Random Observations with tags , on July 16, 2009 by Kent

I noted back in April that new evacuation signs had hit the streets, and wondered if anyone really would know what to do in an emergency. Unlike coastal areas where one or two routes may exist — with them headed away from the shore — when you mark routes in a metropolitan area that isn’t on the coast, planning for an event that isn’t weather related, and install signs with no direction indicated … how can you expect anyone to know where to go?

Added to this ambiguity, what do you do when you are at an intersection like the one below at K and Connecticut? Both are marked Evacuation Routes. Do you go north, or west, or east, or ????. Without manning the routes with emergency response personnel, there is no hope that this system will work.

Fireworks, Please, No Smoking

Posted in Random Observations with tags on June 30, 2009 by Kent

Fireworks please no smokingSigns like this feed into an ongoing conversation that my brother and I have been having. There are a whole slew of signs that on the surface, to anyone with common sense, seem silly because they are so obvious. Here, it only makes sense that you wouldn’t smoke around fireworks.

lawn.mower.warning.labelAnother sign/label that falls into this catagory is the warning on lawn mowers not to reach under them while they are operating.

What is sad, we presume, is that each warning label owes its existence to an unfortunate individual that actually did exactly what the label warns against. In order to safeguard against future lawsuits, labels and signs are created and posted to warn agaist specific actions and prevent further harm to others.

Great Display of Neon

Continuing my quest for good neon, I noticed this nice combination of Fuddruckers and the Guitar Shop. I know the Fuddruckers is relatively new, but seeing the entire building lit up sure brings back images on how things were in days gone by.
